Types of Communities

Senior living communities are voluntary living situations for individuals 60 years of age and older. The most common type of living communities are known as retirement communities, continuing care retirement communities, assisted living communities, memory care communities and residential care homes.

Retirement Communities -

Retirement communities are a sensible solution for independent residents with few medical problems who feel the need for companionship, social activities and the desire to live among retirees with similar backgrounds and interests. Most retirement communities provide accommodations for about 75 to 250 residents. Services typically include meals, scheduled medical appointment transportation, shopping transportation, field trips, tours and housekeeping services.

Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRC's) -

CCRC's offer several living options to choose from, so residents can select the lifestyle that fits with their personal needs. Most CCRC's range in size from 75 to 250 residents. Residents have access to three levels of care-from independent living, to assisted living and nursing care. The appropriate level of support is available to residents all within the same community.

Assisted Living and Memory Care Communities -

Assisted living and memory care communities provide an apartment-like atmosphere. Residents are provided with centralized dining services, shared support such as transportation, mediation monitoring, social and recreational programs, housekeeping, and assistance with their activities of daily living - such as eating, bathing, getting in and out of bed, and using the bathroom.  Assisted living and memory care communities range in size from 30 to 300 residents.

Residential Care Homes -

Residential care homes are in residential neighborhoods and usually provide assistance to residents such as transferring from the bed or wheelchair, ambulating, meals, dressing, incontinence and personal hygiene. They provide all the same services as assisted living communities, but are smaller in size from 1 to 10 residents.
